Basic Refresher Course: Class 2020-A

Date(s) March 8th – April 16th 2020

The Basic Refresher course offered at MLEOTA covers 200 hours of mandated curriculum by BLEOST for Mississippi. In addition, MLEOTA will offer to each officer in the basic refresher course, certification on the Intoxilyzer 8000 breath analyzer, moving Doppler radar and basic First-Aid/CPR.  The cost of certification for the First-Aid & CPR is $35.00/per student-separate from the registration/course cost.  MLEOTA will also offer students in the refresher course, training in working and processing mock crime scenes.  Training included in the course are street gangs of Mississippi, high-risk traffic stops and felony take-down traffic stops in low light/night time conditions.

The deadline for Basic Refresher applications for the 2020-A class is Monday, February 14, 2020.  NO applicants will be accepted after the deadline, so that an accurate head-count can be determined for the class.  At MLEOTA, we strive to assist law enforcement agencies with training in areas, where training was “elective” such as certification in the Intoxilyzer 8000, Moving Doppler radar, along with First-Aid/CPR.  MLEOTA is a “one-stop shop” for departments with officers in the Refresher course needing this training.  Each instructor is certified in his/her field of expertise.  Due to the training regimen, this is a 6 week course, wherein some night classes are scheduled in the evening hours. Each officer sent to MLEOTA for basic refresher training will receive a total of 225 total hours of training.

As required by BLEOST, a mandatory Pre-Entrance PT test is given to each officer prior to admission into training. The Pre-Entrance PT test will be conducted on Thursday, February 20, 2020 at 1:00 P.M. at the gym at MLEOTA.  Officers failing the Pre-Entrance PT test may re-test anytime at MLEOTA prior to the first class.  A wellness program is instituted into the MLEOTA program for Basic Refresher classes.  This program is a very menial program consisting of running/walking, stretching and cardio exercises to help prevent muscle strains and pulls. The wellness program is important due to the officer safety-mechanics of arrest-restraint and control portion of the training to help prevent injury to officers during training.

Officers needing Skills Updates training will be accepted into the various classes of the Basic Refresher class as needed, however; officers will have to bring the original Skills Updates form from Minimum Standards verifying the specific areas of training needed.  Officers attending the Basic Refresher class for Skills Updates training without the original form authorizing the training WILL NOT be allowed to attend or sit-in classes.  No photo static copies of the Skills Update form will be accepted.

Basic Refresher students must check in on Sunday, March 8th 2020 by 3:00 P.M.  Supper meal on Sunday evenings will be “on your own” since the cafeteria will not be operating on Sunday evenings.
