Mississippi Leadership Council on Aging (MLCOA)
The Mississippi Leadership Council on Aging (MLCOA) is a dedicated group working to protect and support senior citizens by building strong partnerships between criminal justice and social services. The Council’s mission is to coordinate efforts that address the unique challenges seniors face, particularly around victimization and crime prevention.
Our Goals:
- Promote Collaboration: Foster coordinated efforts between law enforcement and social service agencies to combat violence against senior citizens.
- Raise Awareness: Support initiatives that educate the public and equip seniors with skills to protect themselves and their property from crime.
- Expand Crime Prevention Programs: Advocate for and grow programs like TRIAD, which bring law enforcement and senior citizens together to address crime, provide victim assistance, and engage the community in public safety.
What is TRIAD?
TRIAD is a partnership between law enforcement agencies (such as sheriff’s offices and police departments) and older or retired community members. This initiative enhances law enforcement services for senior citizens, addressing crime issues that specifically affect them. Through TRIAD, seniors and law enforcement work side by side to develop crime prevention strategies, increase public education, and offer assistance to victims.
Our Progress:
Currently, there are 23 TRIAD programs active across Mississippi, representing 28% of the state’s counties. These programs are funded by the Council through mini-grants, and our goal is to expand TRIAD into all 82 counties in Mississippi to ensure every senior has access to these vital services.
